Mental Health

If you or someone you know is struggling you can access a range of urgent, short- and long-term mental health support.

For urgent help, free call or text 1737 any time, 24 hours a day.

You can also call Lifeline at 0800 543 354 or text HELP to 4357.

For many people the holiday season can be a difficult time, bringing with it feelings of loneliness, sadness or isolation. If you struggle at this time of year, for any reason, you’re not alone, and you don’t have to deal with this on your own.

A good first step, if you are in need of some support, is to see your GP. You and your whānau can use several health and wellbeing services when you are enrolled with a GP team.

For emergency mental health needs over the holiday period contact Crisis Resolution. Free help is available 24/7. Phone Christchurch 0800 920 092.

If you are alone or you feel Christmas pressure is affecting your or someone else’s mental health, you don’t need to keep it to yourself – call or text 1737. Trained counsellors are always on hand to help. Free and available 24/7.

Mental Health Support

Many general practices have onsite Health Improvement Practitioners, Health Coaches and Support Workers. Contact your general practice to arrange an appointment. You can often get same day appointments if needed.

Health Improvement Practitioners are qualified, registered health professionals who help people of all ages take positive steps in improving their physical and mental wellbeing. If there isn’t a HIP in your practice, your GP can refer you to Brief Intervention Talking Therapy.

Health Coaches can support people with understanding healthy choices, goal setting, managing medication, and chronic conditions.

Support workers are specialists in supporting you to navigate challenging situations. They may be able to assist with social engagement, paid work, housing, and money matters.

Your Pegasus Health GP can help you access Brief Intervention Talking Therapy, which offers up to five free talking therapy sessions with a mental health clinician, who can help with a variety of issues such as stress, anxiety, and low mood.
